The Night Manager
About the project
The Night Manager (Disney+ Hotstar, 2023) is the Indian take on John le Carre's spy thriller, following a hotel night manager pulled into the orbit of an arms dealer and sent to infiltrate his inner circle.
It stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Anil Kapoor and Sobhita Dhulipala. For the main title we compressed the whole series into a ~45 second narrative built on one idea: the death of a young girl, the moment the world of luxury and the world of weapons collide.
Approach
Opulent, cinematic, menacing; glamour slowly curdling into dread.
What I did
I was responsible for the CG across the whole sequence: building the 3D scenes, materials and lighting through to the final render passes I handed to compositing. I also worked as the FX Artist, creating the simulations and atmospheric effects that tie the worlds of luxury and weaponry together. The brief was to hold grandeur and dread in the same frame, so most of the work went into mood, controlling light, reflection and atmosphere so every beat reads as both beautiful and threatening.
