Lootere
About the project
Lootere (Disney+ Hotstar, 2024) is a hijacking thriller set off the coast of Somalia, where the crew of a seized cargo ship is taken hostage and an unlikely man has to step up to save them.
Directed by Jai Mehta with Hansal Mehta as showrunner, it stars Rajat Kapoor, Vivek Gomber and Aamir Ali. For the title we framed the pirates not as villains but as hunters, in a place where hijacking a ship is a way of life more than a crime.
Approach
Experimental, painterly, abstract; hand-painted 2D textures over 3D, built from real mocap.
What I did
I was CG Lead on the Lootere title, and the final look came out of a lot of experimentation. We didn't want a standard 3D title, so we ran test after test and landed on a mix of 2D and 3D: we hand-painted custom 2D textures and mapped them onto the 3D objects and the characters, which gave the whole thing an abstract, painterly feel. For movement we kept it practical, wearing mocap suits and shooting our own motion-capture sessions to drive the characters, the kids running, the people in the car and the rest. One of the most experimental sequences I've worked on, and a really good one to make.
